Isle View Park in Tonawanda, N.Y., is the official home of a garden placed there in tribute to domestic violence victims. The ribbon was cut last Saturday as part of the garden’s official opening. County Executive Mark Poloncarz, domestic abuse survivors and domestic violence groups were in attendance, WGRZ reports.

The garden, which is believed to be the first permanent one of its kind in the United States, is representative of the safety, passage and emergence that domestic abuse victims must go through to go from victim to survivor. The hope, according to WGRZ, is that those affected by domestic violence—either directly or indirectly—”can find quiet, peace and hope on the shore of the Niagara River.”
